A Seventh Day (7th Day) Sabbath

The Holy Convocations of the LORD God, Joshua (Jesus) Messiah (Anointed – Christ)

In order to study about the 7th Day Sabbath we need to understand Who is originating the Sabbath and commanding us to keep it.

Jesus (Joshua) Christ (Messiah) is the LORD God of the old testament.

John 8:49-58 (NASB)
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. [50] “But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. [51] “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” [52] The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he shall never taste of death.’ [53] “Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” [54] Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; [55] and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I shall be a liar like you, but I do know Him, and keep His word. [56] “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” [57] The Jews therefore said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” [58] Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

The “I AM”, LORD God.

Exodus 3:13-15 (NASB)
Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I shall say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” [14] And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM“; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” [15] And God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.

He is God and Creator.

John 1:1-3 (KJV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:14 (KJV)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:10 (KJV)
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

1 Cor. 8:6 (NASB)
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ,

Col. 1:13-17 (NASB)
For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, [14] in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. [15] And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. [16] For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities– all things have been created by Him and for Him. [17] And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (KJV)
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Genesis 2:4 (NASB)
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven.

Jesus (Joshua) Christ (Messiah), the Word God and LORD God sanctified (set apart for holy use) the 7th day.

Genesis 2:1-3 (KJV)
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. [2] And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. [3] And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

The Word God, the LORD God and Creator is the One Who became Jesus Christ

John 1:14 (NASB)
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Luke 1:26-35 (NASB)
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee, called Nazareth, [27] to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. [28] And coming in, he said to her, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” [29] But she was greatly troubled at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this might be. [30] And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. [31] “And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. [32] “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; [33] and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.” [34] And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” [35] And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God.

Matthew 1:20-23 (NASB)
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] “And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins.”
[22] Now all this took place that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying,
[23] “Behold, the virgin shall be with CHILD, AND SHALL BEAR A Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”

Knowing that the Word, LORD God, Creator became Joshua [Jesus] Messiah [Christ] the name Immanuel “God with us” is truly understood.

He made the Sabbath for man, the Lord’s Day!

Mark 2:23-28 (NASB)
And it came about that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. [24] And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “See here, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” [25] And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and became hungry, he and his companions: [26] how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he gave it also to those who were with him?” [27] And He was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. [28] “Consequently, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The Sabbath is for us to know that it is the LORD God (Jesus Christ) Who makes us Holy, and by obeying His command to keep the Sabbath holy we will never forget that He is Creator.

Exodus 31:13-17 (NASB)
“But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you. [14] ‘Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. [15] ‘For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death. [16] ‘So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’ [17] “It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.”

Exodus 20:8-11 (NASB)
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. [9] “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [10] but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. [11] “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

Jesus (Joshua) Christ (Messiah) the LORD God is Lawgiver.

Isaiah 33:22 (NASB)
For the LORD is our judge,
The LORD is our lawgiver,
The LORD is our king;
He will save us–

James 4:12 (NASB)
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?

He spoke His law to the children of Israel.

Exodus 19:16-20:22 (NASB)
So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. [17] And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. [18] Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.
[19] When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder. [20] And the LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. [21] Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, lest they break through to the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. [22] “And also let the priests who come near to the LORD consecrate themselves, lest the LORD break out against them.” [23] And Moses said to the LORD, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for Thou didst warn us, saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain and consecrate it.’ ” [24] Then the LORD said to him, “Go down and come up again, you and Aaron with you; but do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest He break forth upon them.” [25] So Moses went down to the people and told them.
[20:1] Then God spoke all these words, saying,
[2] “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
[3] “You shall have no other gods before Me.
[4] “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. [5] “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, [6] but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
[7] “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
[8] “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
[12] “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
[13] “You shall not murder.
[14] “You shall not commit adultery.
[15] “You shall not steal.
[16] “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
[17] “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
[18] And all the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. [19] Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.” [20] And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.” [21] So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.
[22] Then the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.

He wrote His law on tables of stone with His Finger.

Deut. 9:9-11 (NASB)
“When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD had made with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water. [10] “And the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. [11] “And it came about at the end of forty days and nights that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

Deut. 10:1-5 (NASB)
“At that time the LORD said to me, ‘Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the former ones, and come up to Me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood for yourself. [2] ‘And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered, and you shall put them in the ark.’ [3] “So I made an ark of acacia wood and cut out two tablets of stone like the former ones, and went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. [4] “And He wrote on the tablets, like the former writing, the Ten Commandments which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me. [5] “Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, as the LORD commanded me.”

In the new testament Jesus (Joshua) Christ (Messiah), the LORD God, Lawgiver writes the Law of God in our hearts and minds.

Hebrews 10:8-17 (NASB)
After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices for sin Thou hast not desired, nor hast Thou taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), [9] then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Thy will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. [10] By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [11] And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; [12] but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, [13] waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. [14] For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [15] And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
[16] “This is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their heart,
And upon their mind I will write them,”
He then says,
[17] “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

This is why Joshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ) spoke about the law.

Matthew 5:17-18 (NASB)
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. [18] “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished.

Notice He said, “… until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, …” .

The Sabbath was kept by Jesus Christ.

Luke 4:16 (NASB)
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

Luke 4:14-21 (NASB)
And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit; and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. [15] And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
[16] And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. [17] And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,
[18] “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are downtrodden,
[19] To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
[20] And He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him. [21] And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

The apostle Paul’s example:

Acts 13:13-14 (NASB)
Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John left them and returned to Jerusalem. [14] But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.

Acts 13:42 (NASB)
And as Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.

Acts 13:44-46 (NASB)
And the next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of God. [45] But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. [46] And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

Acts 16:13-14 (NASB)
And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled. [14] And a certain woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.

Acts 17:2 (NASB)
And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

Acts 17:33-18:4 (NASB)
So Paul went out of their midst. [34] But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. [18:1] After these things he left Athens and went to Corinth. [2] And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, [3] and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working; for by trade they were tent-makers. [4] And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

Let us keep His Sabbath holy.

Isaiah 58:13-14 (KJV)
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: [14] Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Hebrews 4:9 (NASB)
There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

Joshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ) is the Word God, Creator, LORD God and the Lawgiver. He made the Sabbath for man, it is holy time, and it is His Day “Lords day”. He writes the law on our hearts and in our minds because as long as heaven and earth exist nothing of the law changes.
We of the new covenant obey because we love Jesus Christ our Savior.
John 14:15-16 (NASB)
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. [16] “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

John 14:23-24 (NASB)
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him. [24] “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
