A radio minister was warning his flock against false teachers. He was telling them these false teachers mislead people with unusual or strange interpretations of God’s Word.
This is a very interesting point. It is true, God’s Word shows this. False teachers who supposedly are teaching God’s Word aren’t normally going to stand up and tell you they don’t believe It. But by their teachings and works they prove this.
The first thing that came to my mind was, "What about Sunday keeping"? Isn’t that a strange interpretation of God’s Word?
Here is what their own church doctors have to say about this custom,
Matthew Easton –
"If any change of the day has been made, it must have been by Christ or by his authority. Christ has a right to make such a change (Mark 2:23-28). As Creator, Christ was the original Lord of the Sabbath (John 1:3; Heb 1:10). It was originally a memorial of creation. A work vastly greater than that of creation has now been accomplished by him, the work of redemption. We would naturally expect just such a change as would make the Sabbath a memorial of that greater work."
Let us first understand the above.
Easton is attempting to use human reasoning instead of God’s Word (which is proven with his next paragraph). Beyond this invalid foundation to his surmising we do see direct evidence in God’s Word to contradict this reasoning,
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.  For surely I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
A jot and tittle were little tiny marks in Hebrew writing, basically parts of a letter. In example in English we would be talking about the dot over the letter i, or the slash in a letter Q. Meaning very, very small pieces of writing.
So here The Lord of lords, The Lord of the Sabbath, Himself states that till heaven and earth pass not even the slightest mark in writing would pass away from the Law.
The Lord of Creation, The Lord of the Sabbath, then says,
Whosoever therefore will break one of these least commandments, and will teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever will do and teach them, the same will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
As is easily seen in the 4th commandment in The Law (which can not pass till at least heaven and earth do),
4th Commandment of the Ten Commandments:
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days will you labor, and do all your work:  But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you will not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates:  For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
As is seen the 4th Commandment in the Ten Commandments is not "remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy". It is specifically commanding the 7th day is the Sabbath of The LORD. It is His Sabbath.
Matthew Easton continues –
"True, we can give no text authorizing the change in so many words. We have no express law declaring the change."
Notice he has just condemned himself. He has declared that God’s Word has no commandment in It to change the day of Sabbath from God’s (The LORD’s) commanded day to that of Sunday.
Do not be mislead when they tell you that they are not changing the Sabbath, they don’t call it the Sabbath. Mr. Easton is calling it the Sabbath. Besides, even if they do not call it the Sabbath then they are still guilty of no keeping the 7th Day Holy and taking part in a Holy Convocation (Holy meeting) on that day as commanded in Leviticus 23:3.
Mr. Easton continues –
"But there are evidences of another kind. We know for a fact that the first day of the week has been observed from apostolic times, and the necessary conclusion is, that it was observed by the apostles and their immediate disciples. This, we may be sure, they never would have done without the permission or the authority of their Lord."
This is a bold face lie.
There is no evidence that the apostles kept any day but the seventh day.
Mr. Easton is referring the few verses in which "first day of the week" appear. Such as,
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
The Sunday keeping ministers insist this verse proves the apostles were keeping Sunday as a Sabbath.
God’s Word shows,
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Here are just two verses that show the apostles and disciples broke bread together on any day of the week. The above Acts 20:7 is simply referring to a day like the many others they came and ate together, but on this day Paul was present with them and taught them until midnight (and talked with them even till break of day).
Then these Sunday ministers also bring up,
1 Corinthians 16:1-2
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do you.  Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
This is evidence enough for these ministers to command their flocks to disregard the LORD’s 4th Commandment and the Lord’s Own Words in the New Testament (that The Law would not change until heaven and earth passed).
Their "evidences of another kind" is that Paul spoke and taught groups of disciples on the first day of the week (but as is shown by God’s Word, they did this any day of the week and it was a common practice to eat together throughout the week), and, that Paul commanded the Corinthians to set aside their donation on the first day of the week.
They disregard God’s Commands, The Lord’s Words, the more than 56 verse in God’s Word (in the part we call the New Testament) in which the apostles and disciples refer to the seventh day of the week as Sabbath. They disregard all this True evidence so they can continue the practice of their fathers (which can be traced back to leaders of the Roman Empire in an attempt to bring together pagan and Christian religion).
And a few of these verses in which the apostles and disciples refer to the seventh day as Sabbath,
At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn; and His disciples were an hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.  But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, Your disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath day.
Note this Sabbath day being referred to is the seventh day commanded Sabbath – what the Sunday ministers refer to as the Jewish Sabbath. It was God’s Sabbath not the Jews.
 But He said unto them, Have you not read what David did, when he was an hungry, and they that were with him;  How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?  Or have you not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?
So what does this prove? That The Lord Himself called it The Sabbath.
As a note, the Law had no commandment against picking and eating on the Sabbath day. The Law stated that harvesting a crop was work and that broke the Sabbath. The Pharisees had changed this God commanded Law to include their own ideas. They then accused The Lord of breaking "The Law".
Again, it was The Lord’s custom to go to the synagogue and teach on the Sabbath day (the Jews were not gathering on Sunday to appease a future "Sunday Christian" religion),
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days.  And they were astonished at His doctrine: for His word was with power.
And it came to pass also on another Sabbath, that He entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.  And the scribes and Pharisees watched Him, whether He would heal on the Sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.  But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.  Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the Sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
Again, the Pharisees had redefined God’s Law, just as Sunday ministers do with the Sabbath. They defined the works of God (The Lord’s healing) as working.
And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
Paul and the disciples that traveled with him,
Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:  And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
So what day was this Sabbath? The Commanded 7th day, or Sunday the day that is admitted "…no text authorizing the change…" and "…no express law declaring the change…" (Matthew Easton)?
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down.  And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, You men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.  Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and you that fear God, give audience.
Surely the Jews were not so considerate as to postpone their 7th day commanded Sabbath on behalf of the these Sunday keeping "Christians"? The Sunday ministers and their teachers refuse the evidence that is actually in God’s Word, that these disciples and apostles were indeed observing the commanded 7th day Sabbath.
During this same Sabbath that Paul was keeping and teaching on, he continues,
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning Him.
And when he was done teaching on this Sabbath we see that not only Jews were in this synagogue but also believing Gentiles (i.e. any person not physically born of Israeli parents),
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.
And yet again we see that when Gentiles began believing a question (or dispute) came about in an attempt to force the ordinances of the Law onto Christians (obedient followers of Christ, Who was an obedient follower of His Father),
Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:  But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
Here the false Christians like to end the discussion as proof that the Gentiles had no need to obey God’s Law (produce Works). Yet there is still one more verse,
Acts 15: 21
For Moses of old time has in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.
The false Christians ignore the fact that the "trouble" that had been attempted to be forced on the Christians was not about obeying God’s Law. The "trouble" was the false teaching that a Christian could not be saved unless circumcision was performed, that salvation came from circumcision. This discussion had nothing to do with keeping the Law. See Acts 16:3 where Paul himself has Timothy circumcised… but not to give him salvation, but because Timothy was going to accompany Paul into Jewish synagogues and it would have been an offence to the Jews to bring an uncircumcised man into a holy place.
Again, back to the original topic,
For Moses of old time has in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.
The Gentiles (non Jewish ancestry) Christians were not being told they were released from obedience to the Law, in fact the opposite. Abstaining from "pollutions of idols", " fornication", and "strangled, and from blood" were all apart of The Law.
Then the apostles say why they did not need to write to the Gentiles about The Law. The apostles and disciples were expecting that these Christians would of course be keeping Sabbath and would hear the Law in the synagogues.
The wily Sunday ministers have substituted The Law, when the apostles are speaking about the remedy for breaking the Law; that is the washings, sacrifices, etc., that all had to be done when the Law was broken to cover the sin. As Paul shows, it was not The Law nailed to the cross but these ordinances that could not save. The Lord’s blood sprinkling us is what cleanses us from sin, just as Moses sprinkled Isreal with the symbolic blood to make the first covenant. The Lord’s blood, unlike the symbolic blood and washings of the first covenant, does purify us to cleans us from sins (if we will continue in obedience to Him and His Law, or else our sprinkling will come to no effect just as the disobedient Jew’s circumcision was and is counted as uncircumcision),
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses;  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross;
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
1 Peter 1:2
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.  And on the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spoke unto the women which resorted thither.
To the contrary of Mr. Easton, there is ample concrete proof from God’s Word that His Son, His disciples, His apostles and prophets all kept the 4th Commandment. They kept the 7th day Sabbath, not the first day of the week. But Mr. Easton and his followers have ignored all the evidences, given by God, to follow their own doctrines (just as the Pharisees did), the doctrines of men,
Then they have the boldness to use these verses,
And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days:  Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
First, they want you to assume Paul is speaking of not keeping these commandments, and not letting others judge you for this. Paul did not say this. They assume this because it fits their doctrines. Why would Paul direct that it is all right not to keep these commanded things when he was himself,
For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
One could wonder why Pentecost is to be kept and all the rest of the commanded Sabbaths rejected?
And a shadow of things to come (after Christ’s return),
And it will come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem will even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.  And it will be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them will be no rain.  And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will remain before Me, says the LORD, so will your seed and your name remain.  And it will come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, will all flesh come to worship before Me, says the LORD.
Paul to the Gentile Christian church in Corinth,
1 Corinthians 5:6-8
Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?  Purge out therefore the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:  Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Also note that the last sentence of Colossians 2:17,
 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
The word "is" is a provided word (i.e. not original to the scripture).
" Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body of Christ.", without the "is". The Body of Christ (the Church) is the judge of those false brethren who turn from the Truth of God and refuse to obey His Law.
Again, the only reason to believe Paul is talking about not keeping these commanded Holy Days and commandments is to back up the false teachings, these doctrines of men.
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,  And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increases with the increase of God.
Wherefore if you be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are you subject to ordinances,  (Touch not; taste not; handle not;  Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?  Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh.
This is again, another set of verses these men use to attempt to nullify God’s Laws, but note what Paul says he is speaking about,
Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men
Paul is specifically speaking about these rules and doctrines that men are making up to replace God’s Laws.
As he had said a few verses before,
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
These false teachers have followed the same path as the Jewish Pharisees before them, and Balaam before them. They reverse the True teachings to justify their doctrines for the same reasons the false brethren desired to lead people away to attempt to find salvation in the flesh. They simply are teaching the opposite. They teach no works to be done, but for the same reason,
As many as desire to make a fair show in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.  For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
Yet, those who obey God’s Law and put their faith in His Son for salvation, not ignoring their duty as His children to obey their Father’s Laws,
For circumcision indeed profits, if you keep the law: but if you be a breaker of the law, your circumcision is made uncircumcision.  Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?  And will not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge you, who by the letter and circumcision do transgress the law?  For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:  But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked.  For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regards not persons, nor takes reward:  He does execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loves the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
If the false Sunday ministers taught the Truth of God, then there would need to be judgment. If there were judgment by God’s Word, then their works would be shown to be false and they would be found liars against God.
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.  Be not carried about with various and strange* doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with foods, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
The Lord (The Lord of creation, The Lord of the Sabbath) does not change. He commanded the 7th day Sabbath and all the Commandments, and He never changes.
What makes a doctrine strange is not that it is different from what the "mainstream" religions teach. What makes a doctrine different and strange is that it does not agree with God’s Word. That the teachers have to go elsewhere to justify their doctrines.
* Interestingly, the Greek word interpreted as "strange" also has the meaning of "novel" and "entertainer". If one listens to these Sunday ministers and their teachers, this is exactly what they do. Most of their teaching is meant to be interesting and keep the attention of the audience (stories, jokes, meanings that when checked on simply do not exist). They are entertainers.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
The Only God never changes. There is no variableness, He doesn’t command something one way and then accept it another. There is not even a shadow of a changing.
