Men chose to begin their new year in the dead of winter when nothing is “new” – in fact everything at that point in time is pretty old (consider that anything in nature at this point usually had it’s beginning during the warm season and is no longer “new”). Why would men want such a time to mark the beginning of a new year?
Well it all is traceable to the worship of the sun and the winter solstice (December 22). In many pagan religions (especially including the Romans) the winter solstice was celebrated as the “birthday of the ‘Invincible Sun’” – the shortening days (the weakening sun) giving way to the sun’s new birth (regaining it’s power) as the days now began to grow longer instead of shorter.
These same pagan holy days are also the reason for the Roman Catholic’s choice of December 25th as the fictitious date to place the birth of The Lord Jesus Christ.
Just as Israel rebelled against God, so the gentiles have done.
See the example of Jeroboam who, to prevent his citizens from turning back to God and losing his power over them, created a false holy day that mimicked God’s commanded ones and replaced God’s commands with his own…
1 Kings 12:26-33
And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 33So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
So both the fictitious date of Christ’s birth (which God did not even command to be celebrated – yet ignoring those Holy Days He did command) and the false new year were created out of the old pagan rituals.
God’s New Year on the other hand, begins when everything is springing new from the earth He created.
And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
Speak you unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Your lamb will be without blemish, a male of the first year: you will take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And you will keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel will kill it in the evening. And they will take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they will eat it.
As we know the night of the Passover God sent a destruction into pagan Egypt and freed His people from their slavery.
And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there will no leavened bread be eaten. This day came you out in the month Abib.
“Abib” is Hebrew meaning “be tender”, “green”, “ear” (as of grain)
And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bud.
“ear” above is translated from the Hebrew “Abib”.
Instead of keeping God’s commandments, willingly like children who obey their parent out of Love – men choose rather to keep their pagan rituals and try to mingle God’s Way into it to somehow cleanse themselves.
Six days you will do your work, and on the seventh day you will rest: that your ox and your ass may rest, and the son of your handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of your mouth.
Three times you will keep a feast unto Me in the year. You will keep the feast of unleavened bread: (you will eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it you came out from Egypt: and none shall appear before Me empty:) And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of your labors, which you have sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when you have gathered in your labors out of the field. Three times in the year all your males will appear before the Lord GOD.
So God, in His wisdom, begins the year when thing are new. Life is beginning – grass and wild plants are pushing tender shoots from the earth and animal life is regenerating itself.
Why must we, humans, always be rebellious towards God and His commanded ways? Even in the most simple things we pull away the shoulder and refuse obedience to Him… and somehow we convince ourselves that we will still be saved, that God still will turn a blind eye to our unrepentant sins and accept us. Impossible!
A son honors his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is My honor? and if I be a master, where is My fear? says the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise My name. And you say, Wherein have we despised Your name?
If Judah and Israel did not escape do you think the rebellious gentiles will?
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD has spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against Me. The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel does not know, My people does not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
Why should you be stricken any more? you will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
When we have been punished for our sins, if we refuse to change and obey God, He is not going to keep on punishing the inhabitants of the earth so that they might repent – God does not vainly continue doing things. He will begin punishing to destroy the wicked and remove them from the earth completely.
Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down, and scatters abroad the inhabitants thereof. And it will be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. The land will be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth mourns and fades away, the world languishes and fades away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore has the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. The new wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merryhearted do sigh. The mirth of tabrets ceases, the noise of them that rejoice endes, the joy of the harp ceases.
For thus says the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at My hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach will drink after them. Therefore you will say unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink you, and be drunken, and spew, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. And it will be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then you will say unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts; You will certainly drink. For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by My Name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You will not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, says the LORD of hosts.
And the slain of the LORD will be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they will not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they will be dung upon the ground.
Look at the nations. Diseases greater and more severe, diseases man thought he had overcome returning, nations around the world openly accepting and defending sodomy, destroying weather – draughts that last longer, earthquakes where they usually are not. It is the results of sins. We can not willingly break God’s Laws and be immune to the results, it is impossible.
Why shouldn’t the earth vomit out it’s inhabitants?
Defile not you yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants. You will therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and will not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourns among you: (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;) That the land spew not you out also, when you defile it, as it spewed out the nations that were before you.
Men have many excuses though – The “scientist” will tell them it is ‘climate change’, their false teachers will teach them that they are saved without obedience to God’s Laws (at the same time calling those who respect, obey, and fear God and His Laws – “legalistic”, and “anathema” (i.e. excommunicated, banned) from the “people of God”.
(notice below that verse 2 is the man God will favor, and in verse 3 He begins speaking of the rebellious, then in verse 5 He again is speaking to His people that obey Him)
Thus says the LORD, The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool: where is the house that you build unto Me? and where is the place of My rest? For all those things has My hand made, and all those things have been, says the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offers an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear: but they did evil before My eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
Hear the word of the LORD, you that tremble at his word; your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for My name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but He will appear to your joy, and they will be ashamed.
Are you not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? says the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir? Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, says the LORD.
If you love Me, keep My commandments.
He that has My commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves Me: and he that loves Me will be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.
He that loves Me not keeps not My sayings: and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s which sent Me.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle will in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore will break one of these least commandments, and will teach men so, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever will do and teach them, the same will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Your words have been stout against Me, says the LORD. Yet you say, What have we spoken so much against You? You have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
As Israel did, so the gentiles – they teach that to obey the Law is vain, works of obedience are not needed, there is no profit in it (i.e. as can be heard on many “preaching shows” “…don’t let anyone tell you there is something you have to do to be saved…”)
Then they that feared the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name. And they will be mine, says the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son that serves him. Then will you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and Him that serves Him not.
[4:1] For, behold, the day comes, that will burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, will be stubble: and the day that comes will burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, that it will leave them neither root nor branch.
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and you will go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And you will tread down the wicked; for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, says the LORD of hosts.
Remember you the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-10
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who will be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power; When He shall come to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
God has given every person the ability to make their decisions. Freedom to make decisions is not freedom from the results of those choices.
When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me. Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities? The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment has taken hold on me. Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
[9:1] Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, says the LORD. Take you heed every one of his neighbor, and trust you not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders. And they will deceive every one his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity. Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how will I do for the daughter of my people? Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in heart he lays his wait.
Will I not visit them for these things? says the LORD: will not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone. And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.
Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD has spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perishs and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passes through? And the LORD says, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them: Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, says the LORD; and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked.
